Applications of Valuation Theory,dea of a mix of the earthly and the heavenly, which are also combined, by implication, in the sexual act which is the central event of the poem. The idea of birth which follows from this act in this way acquires epiphanic associations, especially in the pun on “Dropped” which relates the Above to the Below and leads to the closing metaphor:

Estrangement and the Retro-Modernistsoets, more or less contemporary with Philip Larkin, have suffered from the way he — and the Movement poetic with which he was associated — dominated the British poetry world in the 50s and 60s and that it is time their achievement should be recognised.

Some of the work of James Fenton and Paul Muldoon may be accurately referred to in this way but it is at best unhelpful and at worst simply wrong to apply it to the others — especially to the most copiously represented poets, Seamus Heaney, Tony Harrison and Douglas Dunn.
