Developments in Cardiovascular MedicineHigh-resolution computed tomography of the spine and spinal cord using EMI 5005 body scanner (1) was applied to the study of orbital diseases. The scan field of 12 cm is just large enough to include both orbits in both the axial and coronal planes (Fig. 1 – 2 ).

Normal CT Scan Anatomy of the BrainNormal anatomy of the brain can be studied by comparing CT slices in three planes : horizontal, frontal and sagittal. Most present devices allow horizontal sections ; frontal sections can be obtained with some devices either directly or by reconstruction ; sagittal slices are obtained only by reconstruction, with a few exceptions.

CT of the Skull BaseThe skull base is cartilaginous in origin and not membranous as is the calvarium. Bone formation takes place from numerous points leaving synchondroses which permit harmonious growth. These synchondroses, very open in premature neonates, disappear during childhood, the last (spheno-occipital synchondrosis) about the age of 15.

Orbital CT: Normal Anatomy “in vivo”Since the works of Ambrose (1), Gawler (2) and Moseley (3), very many authors have specially studied normal and pathological orbital CT anatomy. Improved CT systems allow a much better approach of the orbito-facial region. This study deals with i/normal macroscopic, ii/biometric an iii/densitometric orbital anatomy.
