Interference Head Wavesnear the boundary at which they are formed. This influence is often due to interference phenomena in the transitional zone adjacent to the boundary. The effect of the interference of a small number of waves is easily computed by direct summation of the individual waves [1, 2, 5].

https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-57631-8This paper presents a numerical study of effect on the amplitude-distance curve of body waves caused by a discontinuity in the velocity gradient at a certain depth. The study was made with an elementary model; two layers with different gradients. The results can be used for more complicated models.

But the first arrivals can also contain other converted and reflected waves which complicate the wave field in the vicinity of the first arrivals.
