The dyes to be described here belong to the Acid, Mordant and Disperse application classes, and are dealt with under these headings.

As more and more dyes were discovered and their chemistry was studied, working rules emerged whereby colour and dyeing properties could be related with structure. Some of the more important contributions to the development of the subject are now briefly discussed.
