描述.This book covers the notion of collective memory – broadly defined as the waysin which differing pasts are created, understood and reproduced – and how thisis perpetuated in Northern Ireland by a wide set of social actors, includingnations, religious and political groupings, and local communities. Such collectivememories are not a preservative for historically accurate recall of bygone eventsbut rather readings of the past subject to contemporary interpretations andpolitical pressure. The adoption of political symbolism remains central tosubsequent events. Indeed, in Northern Ireland, both communities hold theirconflicting ‘memories’ dear and, importantly, rival political organizations haveinvested much in their own reading of the causes of the outbreak and continuationof the conflict. Set alongside constant exposure to other forms of discourse, texts, songs, prose and more visible physical manifestations – such as murals, commemorative gardens, personal tattoos, and even gravestones – there are amultitude of ways of reminding people of particular memories, communityhistories and interpretations of events, and of providing the background withinwhich attitudes are formed..

It sets collective memory within wider comparative frameworks, including processes of myth making and the use of collective memories by local memory entrepreneurs, the state and others.

Many of these narratives revolve around largely oppositional and mutually excluding stories that find distinct and divisive expressions through the social and political movements that find expression through loyalism and republicanism.

Jaron Raper,Laura Goyak,Matthew DeLaneyr culture. Collective memory is central to this, rooted in as it is in people’s justification and reflection of their actions and connected through social practices to other community members. The performance of memory is activated and acted upon by communities to reinforce their identity and to guide community goals.
