Dr. Joanne Simpson and the Beginning of the TRMM Projectt and then TRMM project scientist. Her important work in developing the TRMM science rationale and interacting with our Japanese partners, along with her skill in finding solutions to project problems, is described.

Working with Dr. Joanne Simpson while Managing the TRMM Projectientist is described as the project progressed from early development to a highly successful operational satellite system for rainfall measurement. Close interaction between the project scientist and the project staff of TRMM was one key to the success of the mission.

The TRMM Measurement Conceptcomplementary. Neither sensor by itself would be adequate to achieve the TRMM objectives but the match between the strengths and weaknesses of each sensor results in an extremely powerful payload. Here these strengths and weaknesses are discussed and a specific example is examined.
