Because of this predicament, maximum benefit of clonal propagation cannot be expected until we find the appropriate means either to clone older trees or to determine at a young age what the trees will be like at the end of their rotation.

The Population Biology of Clonal Deployment,specific context and are difficult to generalize. Optimal clonal deployment depends on the characteristics of unspecified pests or diseases and on the future context of forestry, and these factors cannot be safely predicted. What can be done is to discuss some factors, facts, principles, and ideas of possible relevance.
