Liver and gastrointestinal tractOne of the odd facts about lupus it that the liver is rarely a primary target organ, although the term ‘lupoid hepatitis’ is used for some forms of autoimmune hepatitis. Thus abnormal liver function tests in a patient with lupus should raise three main alternative diagnoses:

This syndrome, known as the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) or Hughes syndrome, is a prothrombotic disorder leading to both arterial and venous thrombosis and, in pregnancy, recurrent abortion and pregnancy loss (Figure 13.1).
