Map Projections in Planetary Cartography,Reference surfaces, coordinate systems and projections are the prerequisites for the geospatial analysis of planetary surfaces. In the followings we discuss how these parameters are defined and used on different types of planetary bodies, including rocky planets, satellites, irregular bodies and gas giants.

There is no single solution, and hundreds have been devised. The Earth is round like a ball, and no matter how one flattens the rounded surface the reality of the spherical surface will be variously deformed to a noticeable degree.

Basics of Geodesy for Map Projections,tasks of geodesy, map projections include the study of spherical or ellipsoidal transformation from the Earth’s or another planet’s surface model to a two dimensional representation. The chapter deals with basic mathematics of an ellipsoid or a sphere required to understand map projections.
