https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-531-91339-1If a low tissue PO. is the immediate stimulus for the cheomreceptive process, one has to look for a mechanism that produces a low local PO. in the carotid body in spite of the high blood flow through it. It has been suggested that the low PO. may be brought about by large diffusion distances within the carotid body (1,2).

Effects of Temperature and Stimulating Agents on Carotid Body CellsThe mechanisms of impulse generation in carotid body chemoreceptors are complex. One problem is that there is little information about the behavior of carotid body (type I or II) cells. Thus one of our aims is to see if the electrophysiology of these cells can be correlated with the generation of sensory discharges.
