Modeling of Heterogeneous Chemistry in the Global Troposphere Clouds also play am important role in the atmospheric sulfur cycle. Although liquid clouds occupy only about 5-6% of the volume of the troposphere, up to 80–90% of the sulfur dioxide transformation into sulfuric acid in the atmosphere may occur in the aqueous phase.
