The Modeling and Optimization Approachde which itself would favour the multiplication of that particular piece of nucleic acid in some way — is still as elusive as ever. Once that had been achieved, everything else could (at least, in principle) be left to Natural Selection.

A more general discussion of this approach to the origin and evolution of enzyme catalysis has been presented earlier (Williams and Fox 1974).
