A Historical Glimpse and Stalwartslar galaxies could also be important contributors to the population of systems giving rise to QSO-absorption lines at high redshift, in particular the damped-Lyman-α systems.In this chapter, we also show the mass–metallicity relation found for star forming galaxies at low and high redshift and discuss some possible interpretations.

Chemical Evolution of Early Type Galaxies, stellar populations are derived. The evolution of ellipticals hosting quasars is discussed. The properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the local group are discussed, and by comparing the predicted and observed abundances, we try to understand whether they could have been the building blocks of the Milky Way.

Chemical Evolution of the Milky Way and Other Spirals, more detail. Observational data on spiral galaxies suggest that there has been a downsizing in the star formation, in the sense that the most massive spirals should have formed more quickly and with a more efficient star formation than the less massive ones, and therefore they should be older.
