Contrasting Principles of Synaptic Physiology: Peptidergic and Non-Peptidergic Neuronsral issue is the question of whether the nervous system uses an exclusive set of chemical commands to regulate and respond to the endocrine system. Alternatively, the chemical signals of neurons and endocrine glands may simply be part of a general chemical vocabulary by which neurons communicate with cells.

Reduced release of noradrenaline causes supersensitivity while increased exposure to catecholamine agonists results in a rapid subsensitivity. Changes in sensitivity is found not only in the β-adrenergic receptor but also in adenylate cyclase, protein kinase and other subcellular events.
