Hydrocarbons are thought to cross the outer membrane via specific pores and the inner membrane by diffusion. However, it still remains controversial as to whether there are also active hydrocarbon uptake mechanisms.

Biofilm Stress Responses Associated to Aromatic Hydrocarbons associated tolerance mechanisms and their interplay with other biofilm stress response mechanisms. In this chapter, we briefly summarize the current information on this topic and present the existing research gaps that could expand the biotechnological exploitation of biofilms in this field.
