The Direct Effect of CO2 Enrichment on the Growth of Trees and Foreststus of our knowledge (IPCC, Houghton et al. 1996). Closed forests occupy about 24 % of continental area, but represent 80 % of terrestrial biomass and 37 % of terrestrial productivity. They are good candidates for storing the carbon not found in the atmosphere or in the oceans.
