In particular, the results of experiments on the adaptive characteristics of the underlying mechanisms suggest that local changes in depth over a limited spatial extent may be coded at an early stage in the processing hierarchy.

These findings may direct research on the development of neural mechanisms that underlie the emergence of responsiveness to spatial information in human infants.
