The Pityusic Islands: a geographical approachslands (Mallorca, Menorca, Cabrera and adjacent islets). The Pityusics form a political unit with the Balearics. They are situated approximately 100 km from the Iberian Peninsula (Cap de la Nao), about 220 km from North Africa and approximately 100 km from Mallorca. Their total area is 623 km. (Eivissa, 541 km.; Formentera, 82 km.).

A contribution to the knowledge of Pleistocene coastal profiles in the Pityusic Islands were followed by Spiker & Haanstra (1935), who carried out a complete geological study of the Islands (map scale 1:50 000). However, until recently data for Eivissa have been very incomplete, especially with reference to marine deposits that could contribute to our knowledge of the ancient coastal profiles.

Siphonaptera from small terrestrial mammals in the Pityusic Islandsder study is small or very small, there is little hope of discovering an endemic origin of the host fauna within its borders. Yet species or subspecies population groups may exhibit little-known intercourse amongst various sections of the surrounding areas and thus justify this type of study.
