Microbial metabolism and transformation of selected monoterpenes,int because of the specific problems of ring cleavage that have to be overcome before microorganisms can utilize them as carbon sources for growth. In addition, because of their structural complexity, gratuitous biotransformation by organisms growing on other carbon sources leads to a considerable range of products.

Physiology of microbial degradation of chitin and chitosan, most species alive today. Its phylogenetic distribution is clearly defined: (a) Prokaryotes. Despite its chemical similarity to the polysaccharide backbone of peptidoglycan, chitin has only been reported as a possible component of streptomycete spores and of the stalks of some prosthecate bacteria.

Microbial dehalogenation of haloaliphatic compounds,975; King 1986, 1988; Vogel et al. 1987; Symonds et al. 1988). Microbes have evolved dehalogenating mechanisms for two main reasons: firstly, to use halogenated compounds as growth nutrients and, secondly, as detoxification mechanisms since many of these compounds are potent metabolic inhibitors.
