Trends in Βeta-Lactamase Classificationy after a new β-lactam drug is approved for therapeutic use, a new β-lactamase with the ability to destroy this activity is discovered. To date, β-lactamase classification includes 17 functional groups and four designated molecular classes. The β-lactamase classification systems will continue to evolve as and when new enzymes are detected.

Intensive research is required for developing rapid and easy detection tools for DBLs and for the discovery of class D specific inhibitors.
