Beech Forests: Woody Species Composition, Populations and Spatial Aspects,les of the sun with the horizontal are larger, which may affect forest structure by inducing shallower crowns in the canopy and more vegetation layers (Terborgh, 1985). However, Terborgh (1985) mentions that trees with deep crowns, like beech trees, seem to prevent the development of understory layers.

Canopy-Dynamics in Beech Forests, indicate higher light levels during the juvenile phases of these Asian beeches (Chapter 5). If so, would the east Asian sampled forests have been subjected to more frequent or severe storms or equivalent factors that kept their forest canopies more open?
