The Change of Causative Agents in Wound Infection, Septicaemia and Meningitis in a 2000-Bed HospitalTaking into consideration the results of bacteriological examinations during the last years, the impression was gained that the share of gram-negative bacteria among causative agents of wound infection, as well as of septicaemia, has increased, while at the same time staphylococcal infections are on the decline.

Distribution of Pneumococcus Types at Different Times in Different AreasThe pneumococci belong to the streptococcal tribe; they are gram-positive, capsulated diplococci, soluble in bile, and sensitive to optochin. They show alpha-haemolysis on blood agar and are virulent for mice.

Pathogenic Significance of Coagulase-Negative StaphylococciCoagulase-activity is today accepted as the best in vitro-test for proof of staphylococcal pathogenicity. Coagulase-positive staphylococci are considered to be pathogens, coagulase-negative staphylococci as non-pathogens.

The introduction of sulphonamides and antibiotics in therapy brought about the next one. It now seems that another change in bacterial spectrum is occurring.
