The Nomoto Model,ibed to determine the first order Nomoto indices from the data of ship manoeuvring trials or model tests. Some empirical methods to estimate these indices are given. A few examples showing how Nomoto indices are used are given.

Unconventional Rudders,rudders with tail-wedge and fishtail sections, Schilling rudder, Pleuger active rudder, flap rudder and some other unconventional rudders. Modern developments including the Vectwin rudder and the Gate rudder are included. Modifications of the MMG model for simulation of manoeuvring of ships with these types of rudder are discussed.

Turning Ability,s shown how an increase in turning ability may result in a decrease in controls fixed stability and vice-versa. There is a description of the heel of a ship and speed loss during a turn. The chapter concludes with an explanation of why the rudder is located at the stern of the ship and not at the bow.
