影響因子The state of North Carolina has had a longstanding concern and com- mitment to the understanding and treatment of autistic, communications- handicapped children and their families. This commitment found expres- sion in the only comprehensive statewide program for families confronted with this disability, Division for the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (Division TEACCH). Our program staff has been privileged to respond to this commitment by developing and providing the needed services, and to engage in research informed by our clinical experience. Although many of the problems con- cerning these developmentally disabled children remain to be solved, substantial progress has been made during this past decade of collabo- ration among professionals, parents, and their government representa- tives. The TEACCH staff has resolved to mark the effectiveness of this collaboration by holding a series of annual conferences focused on the several major issues confronting these children and their families. The conferences are held in order to bring together the best research knowl- edge available to us from throughout the country, and to encour

Growing Out of Autismhat of any other autistic child (see also C. C. Park, 1977, 1978, 1982; D. Park, 1974; D. Park & Youderian, 1974), it should be of use at least to sketch her continuing progress as she has grown, not to young womanhood in any complete sense but into a person able to enjoy her life and to make a real contribution to her family and to society.

Recreation and Leisure Needsd 40, and have been typically labeled as trainable mentally retarded, severely profoundly retarded, autistic, emotionally disturbed, deaf-blind, or multihandicapped. Most of these individuals exhibit substantial learning, behavior, and/or physical handicaps and therefore do not learn leisure skills without systematic instruction.

Stress and Coping in Families of Autistic Adolescents schools and implemented with the collaboration of parents (Schopler & Bristol, 1980). However, in most of our public schools special education ends when the student reaches 18 years of age. What happens to the adolescent with autism? What happens to the struggles of his parents?

At the end of the chapter additional comments will be made as to the challenge which awaits parents, researchers, and the autistic adolescent himself.
