The Properties of Austenitic Stainless Steel at Cryogenic Temperatures,d with ready availability, ease of fabrication, and good service experience. Their disadvantages are they are more expensive and have lower yield strength than ferritic Fe-Ni steels and aluminum alloys, and their machinability is poorer than that of aluminum alloys.

Development of Cryogenic Structural Materials for Tokamak Reactor,n the coillcase was increased more than that of the preliminary analysis. Finally, yield strength more than 700 MFa at 4 K was specified for the LCT structural material on the basis of many verification tests and analyses. Accordingly, ordinary 304L stainless steel could not be employed because of its relatively low yield strength at 4 K.

Heat Treatments to Desensitize and Remove Delta Ferrite from a 21Cr-6Ni-9Mn Stainless Steel Intendeto operate safely at cryogenic temperatures. It has to be capable of being fabricated using available machining and joining techniques to give a model with a precisely known shape and high surface finish which can retain dimensional stability during thermal cycling between ambient and its cryogenic operating temperatures.

Preliminary Study on Structural Material Selection for Large Superconducting Magnets, materials of the coils undergo extremely high structural and magnetic stresses at 4K. So heavy thickness plates, which have high yield strength of about twice as high as that of SUS304LN with reasonably high toughness at 4K, are indispensable to construct the magnets.
