Plasma Component of the AirThe atmosphere is an electrically conducting medium so that electric currents can flow. Since the electric conductivity σ is a basic parameter for electromagnetic fields and currents, we outline in this chapter the origin and distribution of σ within the atmosphere.

Ionospheric DynamoWe develop in this chapter a more quantitative treatment of the ionospheric dynamo. For this reason, it is necessary to recall some basic knowledge about atmospheric tidal theory and the coupling between tidal winds and the ionospheric plasma.

Global Magnetospheric Electric Fields and CurrentsIn the foregoing chapter, we made simple estimates of electric fields and currents within the magnetosphere. We quantify in this chapter the global electric field and current configuration within the inner magnetosphere (. < 15.) and its magnetic manifestation on the ground [see also Gurevich et al. (1976) and Pudovkin (1974)].
