The Macromolecules of the Intercellular Matrix of the Arterial Wall: Collagen, Elastin, Proteoglycanstituents of major arteries; they are the smooth muscle cells of the media, the endothelial cells limiting the intima toward the blood stream, and the “fibroblasts” in the adventitia of large arteries such as the aorta.

Proliferation of Arterial Cells in Atherosclerosisitely established that migration of cells from the circulation, endothelium or media accounts for the cellular growth of the lesions. Monocytes, endothelial cells, and medial smooth muscle cells thus have been implicated.

Some Aspects of the Organization and Interaction of Connective Tissue Proteoglycansted evenly through the arterial wall, but are localized in particular regions as shown by histological methods (reviewed by Muir, 1965). Presumably, therefore, each has a specific function related to the biomechanical and biochemical properties of the tissue.
