As a conspicuous part ofthe biota of water bodies, aquatic birds are indicators of theirtrophic state both in terms of species composition (quality) as wellas occupancy and breeding (quantity). Birds may also influence thetrophic state of a water body by importing nutrients (.e.g. residentor migrating birds feeding on adjacent watersheds or the sea). Becauseof anthropogenic activities, predation or their mobility, birds maynot utilize otherwise suitable aquatic habitat. These factorscomplicate the relationship between aquatic bird production and thetrophic status of habitats. As a consequence, the role of aquaticbirds in freshwater ecosystems has usually been ignored. .This volume contains a wide range of papers selected from thosepresented at the symposium and reviewed. . | Pindex | Conference proceedings 1994 |
