Mathematical models and computer simulation provideobjective tools for applying science to determine and evaluate optionsfor resource management at field, farm and regional scales. However,these tools would not be fully utilizable without incorporating socialand economic dimensions into their application. The secondinternational symposium, .Systems Approaches for Agricultural..Development., held in Los Ba?os, 6-8 December 1995,fostered this link between the bio-physical sciences and the socialsciences in the choice of keynote papers and oral presentations, aselection of which is included in this book. The book‘s contentsfurther reflect how systems approaches have definitely moved beyondthe research mode into the application mode. Energy Economics and Financial Marketsction; animal weight gain, reproduction, and import and export of nutrients through fertilizer, purchased feed, milk, and animal sales are accounted for. Rations for animals leading to zero excess manure phosphorus at best economic return are identified by simultaneously minimizing excess manure phosphorus, feed cost and cropland requirement.

Preliminary verification of the system prototype using data from the Dominican Republic and evaluation of the system by potential users suggest that it is logically consistent, reasonably accurate (83% for tree orchard; 68% for contour hedgerows) and potentially useful.
