Parametric and nonlinear processes,c metabolism dioxygen is essential. Other forms of life, the anaerobes, are viable only in the absence of dioxygen, for dioxygen is toxic to anaerobic organisms. Aerobic life has thus evolved in a dioxygen environment having developed the necessary cellular defenses to thwart dioxygen toxicity.
