Relationship between the seed-harvesting ants and the plant community in a semi-arid environment,munity dampens population fluctuations when food resources change. Such loose coupling within and between trophic levels would tend to stabilize the structure of communities subjected to extreme, variable and unpredictable environments, such as the semi-arid and arid regions of Australia.

Seed removal by ants in the mallee of northwestern Victoria,cies selectivity and marked spatial variability, indicating that they may play an important role in plant distribution. The distributions of particular harvester ants appear to be determined by the availability of preferred seeds. The activities of elaiosome-collecting ants are discussed briefly.
