Microscopic Evidence of the Spacing of Synapses on Axons,s work on serial sections. We then discovered a short cut, permitting us to count synapses on much larger samples, and much more easily, by means of the light microscope (Hellwig 1990; Hellwig et al. in prep.).

The stain of the initial segment of the axon, in conjunction with the shape of the dendritic tree, is sufficient in most cases to confidently classify the neurons as belonging to one of our three types.

Essentials on systems and control to another not just by one but by any number of synapses, the numerical ratio of synapses and neurons in the tissue is an indication of how fine the tuning of the influence can be. Our personal preference for one or the other interpretation of the number of synapses per neuron will be apparent in a later section of this book.
