For the user, the job of tuning the controller has also been essentially the same throughout the decades, although new PID designs have been continuously developed to cater to different sets of control requirements.

In practice, such ideal conditions rarely hold and special non-trivial effort must be devoted to ensure effective control performance under these situations. Practical non-idealities in the system may arise from various sources:

Plurisubharmonic functions on ring domains,isfactory performance. For these systems, a more complex control structure may be necessary, or new ways of tuning the PID controllers beyond the classical methods should be explored. This chapter covers several modern approaches towards PID design method under more performance-critical situations.
