影響因子One of the prerequisites for survival is the ability ofcells to maintain their volume. Thus, during the course ofevolution cells have "learned" a variety of strategies toachieve volume homeostasis. This volume regulatory machineryinvolves regulation of both, cellular metabolism andcellular transport and is exploited by hormones andtransmitters to regulate cellularfunction. This book toillustrates the complex interplay of cell volume regulatorymechanisms and cellular function in a variety of tissues.However, our knowledge is still far from being conclusive,and the present collection of reviews is thought to fosterfurther experimental efforts to unravel the role of cellvolume in the integrated function ofcells.

Ingmar Geiger,Michael Kleinaltenkamp on the basolateral side is highly water-permeable. The apical membrane can be quite impermeable to water, as e.g. in the epithelial cells of late distal tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney in the absence of antidiuretic hormone.

Customer Value and Customer Selection that are important for the overall effects of the hormones on liver metabolism. I will suggest that similar effects may follow changes in cellular volume such as those described by Haussinger (this Vol.). The evidence for changes in the mitochondrial volume induced by physiological stimuli in other tissues will also be reviewed briefly.

Furthermore, the mechanisms of homeostatic control and regulation through hormonal, neural and intracellular signals may modify membrane transport mechanisms and enzyme activities that are involved in volume regulation. Thus, both the mechanisms that determine the cell volume and their regulatory signals may be common to other cell functions.
