https://doi.org/10.1007/b138124 exactly one rod is formed by an ameloblast. The proteins are largely removed by the proteases during maturation and the organic phase is replaced by mineral. Enamel rods are interwoven in a basket-like way giving rise to steel-like mechanical properties.

The book by Lowenstam and Weinert “On Biomineralization” published in 1989 is still a top reference book. At present the mechanisms of genetic and molecular control of biomineralization are in the center of interest.

Also no similarity of shell proteins with proteins involved in other biomineralization processes was found. It is suggested that yet unknown events in the secretion process may determine the complex shell structure.
