Hardware Design for WSNs, (CO) sensors is used as an example. Enlarging the lifetime of sensor nodes is the biggest challenge to the hardware design for WSNs. This chapter addresses the challenge from two aspects - power management, i.e. reducing the power consumption, and energy scavenging.

Embedded Software Design for WSNs,. Examples of both analog and digital sensor driver developments are introduced. The implementation of establishing WSNs is illustrated by adopting an IEEE 802.15.4 stack rather than a Zigbee stack for the generality.

Optimization of Sink Node Positioning, the features of the sink node, i.e. static sink node, dynamic sink node, and mobile sink node. Multiple sink node positioning is also considered. Even though any optimization algorithms can be applied to the positioning of sink nodes, only evolutionary computation algorithms are illustrated in the chapter as a case study.
