描述This third edition builds on the introduction of spectral analysis as a means of investigating wave propagation and transient oscillations in structures. Longitudinal Waves in Rods, interacting with discontinuities such as boundaries and changes in cross section..The basic waves in rods are described by a single mode; coupled thermoelasticity is introduced in this chapter as a first example of handling multi-mode problems where the coupling is between temperature and displacement (strain).

Waves in Plates and Cylinders,cattered waves. The case of wave impinging on a rigid disk is considered in detail. The chapter concludes by considering waves (both along the length and in the hoop direction) in cylinders; this is a rich example of differential coupling and the Donnell shell equations are used for an elegant simplification.

Thin-Walled Structures, element method for waveguides, but the stiffness is established in the frequency/wavenumber domain. That is, the individual elements are infinite along the length, but the loads are periodically extended. The focus is on propagation in the circumferential direction. Applications to the point impact of a box beam and a circular cylinder are given.

Higher Order Waveguide Models,gher order waveguide models but using only a limited number of modes. This utilizes the Ritz semi-direct method. Refined rod and beam models are developed and their utility in the context of structures as connected waveguides is discussed.
