Introduction,is generally abundant on the earth’s surface, but it may be locally scarce, and the reflexion of these facts upon the structure, function and distribution of terrestrial arthropods, is the concern of this book.

Water Content, of animal tissues, water content expressed as a precentage of total weight is very much less than its mole fraction—about 70%. In fact, as Table 1 shows, water content is very variable, both within and between species of arthropods, and we may briefly consider the reasons for such variability.
