Prediction of actual residual stresses by constrained minimization of energy,resses caused by current loads (vehicle wheels, restrained thermal expansion of CWR, etc.) and residual stresses induced by manufacturing and/or prior live loads. As demonstrated in Volume I, residual stresses constitute a significant part of the total stresses in rails and thus play an important role in rail fatigue phenomena.
