ESO’s Plan for Optical Detectors total of 15 new systems with 35 CCDs are to be implemented through 1999. This article presents ESO’s plans for fulfilling these needs, with focus on the three main technologies of CCD systems: (i) scientific quality CCDs with new generation amplifiers, (ii) high speed CCD controllers, and (iii) long hold time cryostats.

Large-Area Back-Illuminated CCD Imager Developmentnd for the demonstration of a CCD that is capable of charge transfer in all four directions. We expect the latter to find application as an electronic means of performing tip-tilt correction to compensate for atmospheric turbulence.
