Mean Field Theory of Magnetism of Metals: The Stoner Model,n the insulator such a free motion of an electron is not possible. Correspondingly, the magnetic properties of a metal are quite different from that of an insulator. In this chapter we present an introduction to magnetism of metals. Linear Responses of Metallic Electrons,amely, the elastic constant, we discuss it later in Chapters 5 and 7. We will be particularly interested in the responses in the ferromagnetic state of a metal. The results of this chapter may be useful by themselves but they are also essential in our later discussions on the electron-phonon interaction which is the central theme of this book.
