The Measurement of Underwater Noise Characteristics in Shallow Waters of noise and by their comparison with the results of the paper (Wilson et al., 1985). The Perceived Source Directivity of Surface-Generated Ambient Noise–14 m/s. This gives an index of refraction just less than unity, .≈.99. The relative effects of refraction near the ocean surface, attenuation and the curvature of the rough surface on the source directivity are calculated. It is found that the effects of the curvature of the ocean surface can dominant refraction and attenuation.

Observations and Causes of Ocean and Seafloor Noise at Ultra-Low and Very-Low Frequenciesfloor noise over a very broad frequency band; future and planned experiments will test these ideas. Furthermore, the quantification of seafloor noise, perhaps surprisingly, provides new insights into oceanic and geodynamic processes. The exploitation of these measurements has made new tools available for oceanographic exploration.
