Point-Contact Spectroscopy in a Heavy-Fermion Metal: UPt3 vs CuFor point contacts with the heavy-fermion system UPt. the non-linearities in the current-voltage characteristics are investigated as a function of the bath temperature. The data are discussed in terms of local heating of the contact area. For comparison, point contacts of Cu show energy-resolved spectroscopy of the electron scattering.

Theory of Mott Insulators>We review a conceptual picture of Mott insulators, based on strong orbital as well as spin polarization in unrestricted Hartree-Fock, theory, with screened intra-atomic parameters. This picture is used to interpret recent works. The mechanism for the breakdown of local-density band theory is carefully discussed.

Variational Monte-Carlo Method for Strongly Interacting Electronsn Hamiltonians. Its advantages are clear. It allows the essentially exact evaluation of matrix elements of wavefunctions which have strong shortrange correlations explicitly built in to them. The Molecular Orbital Cluster Model Approach to Electronic Structureture of this approach is that approximations are included in a controlled fashion. Parameters which are adjusted to make the computed results fit experimental data are not used. In principle, the exact cluster wavefunction may be obtained by using a sufficiently large CI.
