Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Tropical Australia: The Southern Hemisphere Monsoonritime continent (Ramage 1968). It is the location of one of the three global tropical heat sources and is the primary region of latent heat release associated with both the Southern Oscillation and the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO; see chapter 8 for more details). Thus, it plays an important role in the dynamics of the global climate.
