Effects of Ion-Atom Collisions on the Propagation and Damping of Ion-Acoustic Waves,/.. from 1 to approximately 3–4, caused by ion-atom collisions, results in a decrease of the (Landau) damping of the waves. Low Frequency Waves and Irregularities in the Auroral Ionosphere as Determined by Radar Measurementicular angle with the earth’s magnetic field in the scattering region. This geometry is illustrated in Figure 1. Later work has substantiated Dr. Chapman’s concept and suggests that this magnetic aspect condition — or perpendicularity condition — must be satisfied within just a very few degrees or no echoes are obtained.
