The Vegetation Index and the Study of Vegetation Dynamics, of satellite data are given special attention. Time-series of NOAA AVHRR data are used for illustrating the characteristics of the vegetation index for major ecosystems. Temporal development curves are interpreted in terms of seasonality, agricultural practices and plant growth. Major research needs are identified.
